With our wedding anniversary approaching, I was searching for somewhere truly special when a friend recommended WOOHANA Jonggak. I'd been curious about Korean beef omakase for a while, so the recommendation led straight to a reservation. With WOOHANA's reputation as one of the top premium Korean cuisine destinations in the Gwanghwamun area, I wanted to see firsthand whether it lived up to the hype.

WOOHANA Jonggak is located on the second floor (Room 203) of Grand Seoul Tower 1, a short walk from Jonggak Station. If you're taking public transportation, it's just a three-minute walk from Jonggak Station exit. For those driving, the Grand Seoul building parking garage offers three hours of complimentary parking — a significant perk given how challenging parking can be in the Gwanghwamun district.

Operating hours are 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM on weekdays, and 11:30 AM to 10:00 PM on weekends. Note that there's a break time from 3:00 PM to 5:30 PM, so it's worth checking before you visit. The phone number is 0507-1481-7561.

The moment we stepped inside, I was struck by the sleek interior design and the immaculately organized open kitchen. The entire space exudes refined elegance with a calm, composed atmosphere. But what impressed me most was that every single seat is in its own private room. This meant we could enjoy our time together completely undisturbed, without worrying about other diners.

Inside our assigned room, we found a welcome card with our dedicated manager's name — a thoughtful touch that set a positive tone from the start. The private room structure makes WOOHANA ideal not just for anniversary dinners and date nights, but also for family gatherings, engagement dinners, and business meetings. In fact, the room next to ours was hosting what appeared to be a family celebration.

We visited on a weekend evening and selected the Dinner B course. For the Korean beef grilling portion that comes later in the course, we chose 120g, and for one course we upgraded from striploin to tenderloin. The tenderloin carries an additional charge, but we wanted to compare the two cuts side by side.

After we ordered, an impressive presentation began. Ingredients emerged from a lacquered box surrounded by theatrical white smoke — it felt like a performance in itself. Seeing the pristine ingredients displayed so dramatically heightened our anticipation for the courses to come. This kind of staging is rare, and it made a lasting impression.

Sparkling wine and grape juice were also set at our table. My husband reluctantly chose juice since he was driving, but the moment we clinked glasses and toasted felt special nonetheless. Worth noting: WOOHANA is a corkage-free establishment, so you're welcome to bring your own wine without any fee.

The first dish was a silky chestnut sweet potato porridge. Its smooth texture and subtle sweetness — never cloying — was the perfect palate opener. The gentle, nutty flavor coated the mouth and built anticipation for what was to come.

Next came four bite-sized amuse-bouches presented on a small wooden platter: beef tartare brioche, sea bream, lobster, and fried Korean beef. The plating alone was captivating, and each ingredient's distinct flavor came through clearly while harmonizing in a single bite. There's something about small, precious portions that makes them taste even more delicious — and that wasn't just my imagination.

The tuna and uni course was a visual triumph. Fresh tuna belly, crisp pickled baby cabbage, and creamy uni came together with a bright yuzu broth, delivering a refreshing yet luxurious taste. The freshness of each ingredient was unmistakable.

The abalone dish featured chewy abalone paired with braised radish and zucchini. The abalone's natural richness combined beautifully with the deeply savory braised radish, while the tender zucchini provided a clean, refreshing finish.

The grilled tilefish arrived perfectly cooked — crispy skin, moist interior. A delicate shiso-infused sauce cut any fishiness without overwhelming the dish. The way they balanced the herb notes — which can be polarizing — was expertly done.

The Korean beef sukiyaki was WOOHANA's own interpretation, featuring their signature sauce paired with tender Hanwoo. While the format was familiar, the unique sauce created an entirely new flavor experience. Served in a small earthenware pot, it looked almost adorably charming.

The final course before the main grilling was beef tartare noodles made with brisket and yukjeot (salted beef). The broth was rich yet clean, with springy noodles that left the palate refreshed. Despite the succession of courses, nothing felt heavy or greasy — thanks to these palate-cleansing dishes interspersed throughout.

The main Korean beef grilling featured two cuts: 120g of striploin and tenderloin. Our manager grilled each piece tableside and guided us on the optimal moment to eat, ensuring we experienced both cuts at their absolute best. The striploin was juicy with a satisfying chew, while the tenderloin melted on the tongue with buttery softness. The contrast between the two cuts made the comparison truly enjoyable.

Throughout the entire course, our dedicated manager's attentive service stood out. Each dish came with a clear explanation of the ingredients and suggested eating method, and water and beverage refills arrived right on cue. Most impressively, the manager monitored our dining pace and timed each subsequent course accordingly — true professionalism.

Reservations are essential. Weekends and weekday evenings often book up completely, so I recommend securing your table at least one week in advance via phone or Naver reservation. If you're celebrating a special occasion, mention it when booking — you'll likely receive extra thoughtful touches.

WOOHANA Jonggak fully deserves its reputation as a premier destination for premium Korean cuisine in the Gwanghwamun area. Fresh ingredients, precise technique, elegant plating, and the privacy of individual rooms — every aspect delivered a satisfying experience. While the price point is certainly not budget-friendly, for a special occasion it offers genuine value.

The course composition was substantial yet never tedious, and each dish built anticipation for the next in a beautifully paced progression. The way WOOHANA blends the refinement of traditional Korean cuisine with the elegance of fine dining under the concept of Korean beef omakase was its greatest strength. This meal left such an impression that I'm already planning to return for our next anniversary.
